“Oil Spill”

A 1,000 gallon Oil Spill at Royal Terminal depot

NETCONG (11/27/07) – The Environmental Crimes Unit of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a   home heating oil spill that yesterday caused more than 1,000 gallons to pour into a tributary of the Musconetcong River here.

The spill happened at the Royal Terminals depot on Flanders Road while a tanker truck was unloading 8,000 gallons into one of the company’s huge 60,000 gallon storage tanks. It is believed the tank overflowed and the investigation will involve why the Royal Terminal employee making the delivery didn’t see that the tank was overflowing.

Authorities said a passing motorist saw the stream of a red color liquid running along Flanders-Netcong Road into a storm drain and notified the Netcong Police.

An environmental clean up was initiated immediately yesterday.  It was not known how long that would take or what the cost would be.

Local fire departments and the Morris County hazardous materials team as well as the State Department of Environmental Protection were assisting in the clean-up which will involve the use of vacuum equipment and removing contaminated soil.
