MORRISTOWN (12/14/05) – For the first time ever, everyone is entitled to participate in the new Medicare prescription drug program regardless of income, health status or prescription drug usage. All will have access to prescription drug coverage effective January 1.
According to the Morris County Division on Aging, Disabilities and Veterans, Medicare recipients should have received their "Medicare & You handbook for 2006 which explains the prescription drug coverage and which plans are available to residents in the Morris County area.
Seniors who currently have prescription drug coverage should check with their insurer to be sure their coverage is equivalent and in line with the new Medicare coverage program.
Division Director Theresa Davis says if the coverage is not equivalent or if the individual only has supplemental prescription coverage they will need to enrroll in the new Medicare program to be sure their prescription needs and costs are covered.
Which ever plan a person chooses, Medicare drug coverage will help by covering brand name and generic drugs at pharmacies that are convenient for the individual
Davis said enrollment is now underway and individuals may sign up until May 15, 2006. Those who do not sign up when they are first eligible or by May 15 may be penalized, she said.
For covered drugs, according to Medicare, anyone who joins in 2006 will pay a monthly premium that will vary depending on the plan chosen. Medicare estimates the monthly premium will be about $37 in 2006. Those who enroll also will be responsible for the first $250 worth of prescription drugs.
Information about specific plans in the Morris County area may be found by visiting the Medicare Web site at www.Medicare.gov or by calling 1-800 MEDICARE. Local assistance also is available through the State Health Insurance Program by calling (973) 989-5773 or Morris County’s NJ EASE at 1-800-564-4656.
