MOUNT OLIVE (12/15/06) – If there were any doubts about appointing five new members to take the reins of the seven member Library Board concerns were put to rest last week when the new board re-organized without a hitch.
Normally, the appointments are for periods so that one or two members are appointed every year.
The previous board had been a source of contention with the township’s governing body almost from the day the new library opened in January, 2005. It was mostly about control of the board’s finances.
When Mayor David Scapicchio took office last month there were two seats that hadn’t been filled by the former mayor, Richard DeLaRoche, and two seats, including that of the president, who had been appointed by DeLaRoche, had never won confirmation by the Township Council.
The president, Gerald Sheard, told Scapicchio he didn’t wish to be reappointed. The other member not re-appointed was Cathleen Sullivan.
Scapicchio, as mayor, is a constitutional member of the board and he named as his alternate, Chris Kenny, to succeed Robb Pearson, who was DeLaRoche’s alternate. The other constitutional member is Superintendent of Schools Dr. Rosalie Lamonte and her alternate is Noreen Risko. The only remaining member of the former board was Joan Young, who has been a member for five years. Her appointment expires December 31, 2007. She was the board’s treasurer.
The new members and their terms of office are: Judith Hirky of Budd Lake, December 31, 2008; Suzanne Jeska, December 31, 2009; Stephanie Sherman, December 31, 2010; and Stanley Miller. His appointment expires at the end of this month.
After introductions of the new members last Wednesday, the first order of business was the election of officers.
Three of the appointees are residents of the Flanders section of the township: Suzanne Jeska was elected president, Stephanie Sherman, vice president and Stanley Miller, secretary. Young will continue as treasurer. All of the elections were unanimous.
Suzanne, a mother of three, is a professional Web designer and president of her own business, (MRN Web Designs www.MRNwebdesigns.com.) She has lived in Mount Olive 12 years with her husband David, a director of Pearson Education of Upper Saddle River, a textbook publishing company. They have three children, Michael, 10; Rachel,7 and Nicole, 4. Michael and Rachel are enrolled in the Tinc School and Nicole, the Hillside Nursery School.
