MOUNT OLIVE (12/14/05) – The old municipal building complex on Route 46 isn’t going without a fight to the end.
It seems the NJ Department of Environmental Protection has delayed granting an asbestos removal permit to a contractor for so long that the weather has become a factor and may force its demolition to be put off until the "weather breaks. "
The building has long been a bone of contention in the township. The governing body, which had been accused of allowing what some felt was an "historic " building to go to pot. Others, especially in the Historical Society, felt it could be rehabilitated at less cost than it would take to demolish it. But it appeared the majority of residents just saw it as an eyesore and wanted it removed.
The building does have historic significance. It is 79 years old and did serve as the township’s municipal building In the late 1930’s and 1940’s it was a well known casino, restaurant, bar, and "dance club. " It was host to several of the bands in the "big band era " and comedians like Jackie Gleeson.
Apparently there still are women around who worked at the casino during those years, especially during World War II, for "ten cents a dance. "
At this week’s Council meeting Business Administrator Rick Prill, reported that the contractor, Lurch Demolition of Avon, had not yet received the asbestos removal permit from DEP but that work will commence as soon as it is received, "weather permitting. "
The Council awarded the bid to Lurch in October to remove the building for $79,000. The company will have 30 days after it starts to complete the job.
