ROCKAWAY TWP. (12/22/05) – The Board of Education completed a tedious three month search yesterday digging deep into the kind of experience a county superintendent and the head of other school districts brings to the system.

They unanimously agreed to hire Hunterdon County Superintendent of Schools Gary J. Vitta to head the township school system. He will replace Arthur Travios, who has served as interim superintendent since a year ago November. His salary will be $150,000.

Vitta, who lives in Denville, is scheduled to start in his new position on March 1. Vitta has been in the field of education for more than 30 years having served as superintendent in Carteret and the West Essex Regional School system.

Vitta will be coming to the township at a time when the present facilities are overcrowded. Board President Frank Giarratano expressed the board’s satisfaction with their selection of Vitta.
